Ships, acoustics and deep-sea tools
The early research vessel Atlantis arrived in 1931 to support sampling and hydrographic surveys. Wartime demands expanded underwater-acoustics research. Later, research vessels and the human-occupied submersible Alvin enabled direct investigation of deep-ocean environments.
