From summer teaching to a permanent laboratory

In 1887 the Woman’s Education Association organized a committee to continue the research and educational work of the Annisquam laboratory. Incorporated on 20 March 1888, the MBL appointed embryologist Charles Otis Whitman as its first director. Initially a summer institution, it encouraged cooperation across universities.

Biological material and experimental questions

Early courses included invertebrate zoology, embryology, physiology and microscopy. Marine organisms supplied material for investigating development, cell structure and neural activity. Subsequent work expanded into regeneration, microbiomes and imaging, drawing together resident researchers, visiting investigators and laboratory teaching.
