Office and historical writing at Xuancheng

Fan Ye, courtesy name Weizong, belonged to the Fan family of Shunyang. A son of Fan Tai, he was adopted into a relative's line. His biography describes interests in classical learning, prose, clerical script and music. Official appointments involved court documents, personnel administration and service on princely staffs.

In 432, drinking and listening to funeral songs on the eve of a royal funeral angered Liu Yikang, Prince of Pengcheng. Fan was demoted to governor of Xuancheng. The Book of Song connects this appointment with his decision to reshape existing Later Han histories into a new work. He subsequently returned to senior posts.

Organizing history through narrative and judgment

In his prison letter to nephews, Fan explains that meaning should direct language. He discusses arrangement, selection and the compressed arguments conveyed by introductory essays and concluding judgments. Historical prose, in this account, required organization as well as extensive knowledge.

Grouped biographies brought together exemplary officials, independent-minded individuals, literary figures and peoples beyond the imperial heartland. Fan also intended to supply institutional treatises comparable to those in the Book of Han. His letter distinguishes accomplished narrative work from that still unfinished, while preserving his unusually confident assessment of his own writing.

Execution and the unfinished treatises

In 445 Fan was executed for treason in a case involving Kong Xixian and plans to install Liu Yikang. The Book of Song preserves accusations, interrogation and imperial orders alongside Fan's prison writings.

His annals and biographies survived, but the projected treatises remained unfinished. Under the Liang dynasty, Liu Zhao annotated and supplied Sima Biao's earlier eight treatises in thirty juan to accompany Fan's work. The received book therefore joins contributions from several authors: Fan's narrative, Sima's institutional history and Liu's annotations.
