Bringing scientific services together

NOAA was established under Reorganization Plan No. 4 of 1970, effective October 3. It combined existing coastal-survey, weather, fisheries and environmental-data functions. Some predecessors date to the nineteenth century, but those earlier dates are not NOAA’s own founding date.

From observations to services

The agency uses satellites, vessels, laboratories and science centres to investigate environmental change. Observations and models support forecasts, storm warnings, climate monitoring and ocean information for the public and emergency managers.

Marine and coastal resources

NOAA also works on fisheries management, coastal restoration and marine commerce. Its mission connects environmental understanding and information services with resource management, including international cooperation on global weather and climate.
