Medical training and plant anatomy

Mohl studied medicine in Tübingen and used material from Carl von Martius’s Brazilian expedition to investigate palm and tree-fern stems. In 1835 he became professor of botany at Tübingen, pursuing research in cellular anatomy, tissues and physiology.

Observing how cells arise

Mohl observed division in the alga Cladophora in 1835 and examined cell divisions associated with stomatal formation in 1838. Such observations supported cell production through division, offering a different account from theories that treated new cells as crystallizing in an unstructured substance.

Living contents and the wall

In 1846 Mohl applied protoplasm to the living contents of plant cells. He studied wall thickening, pits and the cellular construction of plant fibres. Also skilled in microscope optics, he co-founded Botanische Zeitung with Diederich von Schlechtendal in 1843, connecting observation with technical practice and publication.
