Gravity and heat flow
Bullard moved from physics into geophysics, measuring gravity in East Africa and developing rock-conductivity and heat-flow methods with colleagues. With Roger Revelle and others, he later extended heat-flow measurements to the deep ocean floor.

Geomagnetism and computation
He used computation to investigate dynamo theory and the generation and variation of Earth’s magnetic field. In 1965 he co-authored a study of the fit of continents around the Atlantic with J. E. Everett and A. G. Smith.

Institutions and teaching
He directed Britain’s National Physical Laboratory from 1950 to 1955 and subsequently returned to Cambridge for geophysical research and teaching. After retiring in 1974, he continued research and graduate supervision at Scripps.
