Seismology and global tectonics
Isacks studied and began his research career at Columbia. With Jack Oliver and Lynn Sykes, he co-authored Seismology and the New Global Tectonics in 1968, linking earthquake patterns with descending oceanic slabs and providing important evidence for plate tectonics.

Investigating the Andes
After joining Cornell in 1971, he studied segmentation of the Nazca–South America subduction zone and helped develop a long-running Andes research programme. He used large-scale digital elevation data to relate mountain topography to lithospheric processes.

Remote sensing and Earth systems
He later investigated high-mountain climate and terrain through NASA Earth-observation research and applied digital topography to New York’s Finger Lakes. He retired in 2008, remaining connected with colleagues, and died in Ithaca on September 9, 2026.
