Investigating Earth with seismic waves
Gutenberg earned his doctorate at Göttingen in 1911, with early research addressing Earth’s core. He continued using seismic propagation to study crust, mantle and core structure, including questions about a low-velocity mantle layer.

The Pasadena research group
He joined Caltech in 1930 and directed its Seismological Laboratory from 1946 to 1957. The group recorded local Southern California earthquakes and analysed distant events to investigate Earth at different scales.

Magnitudes and observation
His collaboration with Richter and other colleagues supported more systematic comparison of earthquakes and station records. Local monitoring and distant-earthquake research reinforced one another within the laboratory, broadening the scope of seismology.
