Atmospheric and polar research
Wegener earned an astronomy doctorate in 1905 and then worked in meteorology. After his first Greenland expedition in 1906–1908, he taught at Marburg; in 1924 he moved to Graz.

Proposing continental drift
He presented continental movement publicly in 1912 and published The Origin of Continents and Oceans in 1915, subsequently revising it. His proposal provoked a long debate and should be distinguished from the later framework of plate tectonics.
Final expedition and later evidence
Wegener died during his 1930 Greenland expedition while returning from supplying an inland station; his body was found the following year. New evidence from ocean-floor relief, magnetic stripes, spreading and earthquakes later helped establish plate tectonics.
