Merging five chemical-engineering departments

The East China Institute of Chemical Technology was established in Shanghai in 1952. During national reorganization of higher-education departments, chemical-engineering departments from Jiaotong, Aurora, Datong, Soochow and Jiangnan universities joined the institute, concentrating previously dispersed teaching resources.

The national reorganization plan of May 1952 already included the institution. Cheng Huanxi, previously teaching analytical chemistry at Jiangnan University in Wuxi, moved to the new institute for teaching and research. Existing staff and courses transferring with departments supplied its initial working foundation.

Autumn registration and an operating institution

An institute notice in Liberation Daily on 13 October 1952 announced registration under the new name. The school had to serve new admissions and students continuing from existing departments. It held its founding and first-semester opening ceremony on 25 October.

The notice translated departmental reorganization into opening procedures: where to report, when to register and how to enter the new teaching arrangements. The name entered students’ records and everyday life as the merger became an operating organization.

Zhang Jiangshu’s leadership and the new campus

Zhang Jiangshu became the first director and arrived on 1 December 1952. Autumn classes had already begun, bringing newly admitted and transferred students into one institution.

With limited funds, teaching and construction proceeded together. The school decided late in 1952 to build at Meilong and moved there in autumn 1954. Teaching, residential and laboratory space supported growing enrollment and a more stable campus.

Courses, textbooks and research training

Chemical-engineering education combined foundation courses with specialized training. Zhang continued undergraduate teaching while handling administration. His coauthored textbook on physical and colloid chemistry joined colleagues’ books on analytical, organic and inorganic chemistry and chemical-process equipment. In 1956 the school entered the stage of admitting postgraduate students for candidate-degree training.

Teachers also organized and disseminated scholarly work. Cheng Huanxi taught and researched analytical chemistry, joined the institute journal’s editorial board in 1957 and later contributed to Cihai. Such activity connected teaching with papers, terminology and scientific-reference work.

Organizing laboratory and equipment management

The institute adopted laboratory and teaching-equipment regulations in 1955. Implementing courses required instruments, chemicals and premises, making their management a basic institutional responsibility.

Experimental instruction accompanied lectures. Teaching assistants first guided laboratory work before progressing to classroom teaching. The laboratory arrangements established under Zhang incorporated maintenance of experimental conditions and staff training into everyday operations.

From a specialist institute to ECUST

The school became a national key university in 1960 and adopted the name East China University of Science and Technology in 1993. Its charter approved in 2015 recalls the merger of five departments and defines an engineering-led university with coordinated development across disciplines.

The charter identifies undergraduate and postgraduate education as basic forms and sets out support and oversight responsibilities for its sponsor, supervising authority and joint supporters. This broader organization developed from the specialist institute, with the courses, laboratories and scholarly exchange established in the 1950s providing an important route into its history.
